Schuylkill County Museums & Historical Societies

The following is a list of museums and historical societies established within Schuylkill County. Museum life isn’t very popular in the Skook, but it still has a few. Try to visit some of these locations to show some local support!

Schuylkill County Museums

The following museums are freestanding institutions not associated with historical societies. They focus on unique aspects of the county and provide an educational diversion for visitors.

Schuylkill County Agricultural Museum, Schuylkill Haven

The Schuylkill County Agricultural Museum celebrates the county’s history of farming and other agricultural endeavors.

D.G. Yuengling & Son, Inc. – Brewery, Museum and Gift Shop, Pottsville

Yuengling Beer has become Schuylkill County’s best-known accomplishments. Although the company’s headquarters have moved to Flordia, the original Pottsville site still holds tours and preserves a museum.

Fighter’s Heaven, Orwigsburg

Fighter’s Heaven is a museum dedicated to Muhammad Ali in the Deer Lake area of Orwigsburg. The location was originally the famous boxer’s training camp and has since been converted into a museum to honor his life.

Jerry’s Classic Cars & Collectibles Museums, Pottsville

Jerry’s Museum has the distinction of being the first classic car museum “in the area”. Although not very large, the museum houses classic cars and vintage paraphernalia.

Museum of Anthracite Mining, Ashland

Ashland’s Museum of Anthracite Mining has anthracite coal exhibits as well as information on the area’s history with coal mining.

Schuylkill County Historical Societies

A historical society dedicates itself to a community’s past. It chronicles important landmarks and milestones of those communities and are each integral to its timeline’s documentation. The following is a list of historical societies in Schuylkill County.

Schuylkill County Historical Society and Museum

Incorporated in 1903, the Schuylkill County Historical Society is located at 305 N Centre Street in Pottsville, the county seat of Schuylkill. This historical society serves the entire county.

Schuylkill Historical Fire Society

The Schuylkill Historical Fire Society honors and preserves Schuylkill County’s long history with firefighting. It’s located at 105 S Jardin St. in Shenandoah.

Ashland Area Historic Preservation Society

The Ashland Area History Preservation Society was established in 1999 and serves Ashland, Gordon, Locust Dale, Fountain Springs, and other surrounding areas. The society curates a museum and a genealogy library.

Auburn Area Historical Society

The Auburn Area Historical Society was founded in 2016 and does not appear to have a physical location. Most information is on its website, which chronicles the borough’s history since its establishment in 1857.

Butler County Historical Society

Located in Butler Township at 123 W Diamond Street, the Butler County Historical Society serves the township and the surrounding sites. 

Girardville Historical Society

The Girardville Historical Society also seems to only have an online presence using Facebook. The town itself was incorporated in 1872.

Greater Shenandoah Area Historical Society

The Greater Shenandoah Area Historical Society is located at 201 S Main St. in Shenandoah and serves the town of Shenandoah as well as the surrounding areas.

Mahanoy Area Historical Society

The Mahanoy Area Historical Society is located at 1 W Centre Street #5 in Mahanoy City. In its day, Mahanoy City was a relatively prosperous coal town, with the St. Nicholas breaker located just outside of its borders. The society covers Mahanoy City, Mahanoy Township, Delano, Gilberton, and Ryan Township in its preservation efforts.

Minersville Area Historical Society

The Minersville Area Historical Society is located at 100-102 S. Third Street in the borough of Minersville and was established in 2006. 

Orwigsburg Historical Society

The Orwigsburg Historical Society is located at 109 E Mifflin St. in Orwigsburg. It serves both Orwigsburg and southern Schuylkill County.

Pine Grove Historical Society

The Pine Grove Historical Society was established in 1989 and is located at 205 N Tulpehocken St. in Pine Grove. The town itself was incorporated in 1832.

Tamaqua Historical Society

The Tamaqua Historical Society is located at 18 W Broad Sreet in Tamaqua. The associated museum showcases exhibit relevant to the town’s coal region history.
